With Covid also impacting oral health, such as of the
salivary glands, taste and smell sensations and oral mucosa integrity,
it is important to maintain good dental hygiene to avoid emergencies
that compel you to visit a dentist. Dr Swapnil Gupta, a Delhi-based
dental surgeon and implantologist, shares suggestions on oral hygiene
and measures to follow while visiting a dentist’s clinic.

Care at home

*
Follow standard dental care norms. Brush your teeth twice daily and use
a medicated mouthwash. Some toothpastes cater to tooth sensitivity and
can be used to keep infections under control till the time you visit a
dentist.

* Avoid consuming food that is too hot or cold if you have sensitive teeth.

*
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand
sanitiser. * Clean the toothbrush properly after use to ensure it is
not contaminated.

Precautions while visiting a dental clinic

*
Participate in pre- and post-appointment screenings. Wear a mask at the
dental facility, while discussing your consultation and on the way out.

*
Avoid using the restroom. If you indeed have to, wash or sanitise your
hands immediately afterwards. Remember to wash your hands while leaving
the clinic.

* Carry minimum stuff to the clinic. Avoid wearing a
wristwatch, jewellery and other additional accessories. Make payments
digitally.

Visit a dentist only if

It’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible if you notice any of the following conditions:

* Swollen cheeks or gums and extreme pain from swelling or possible infection.

* Extreme tooth sensitivity or toothache.

* Continuous gum bleeding.

*
Issues such as teeth cleaning, whitening of teeth, mild sensitivity or a
small chip in the tooth can all be treated at a later point in time.
